PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS

Please use the following link to register for the 2025 pre-conference workshops: ingroup.net/2025Addons

MORNING WORKSHOPS:

SESSION A: Team Research Reimagined: Applying Diverse Perspectives on Team Interactions

Thursday, July 17, 2025
9:00am - 12:00pm
Facilitators:  Nadine Bienefeld, ETH Zurich; Margarete Boos, University of Göttingen; Josette Gevers, Eindhoven University of Technology; Maike Isaac, University of Bern; Juliane Kämmer, University of Bern; Sandra Keller, University of Bern; Pedro Marques-Quinteiro, Lusophone University of Humanities and Technologies; Lara Morscheck, University of Bern; Julia Seelandt, University Hospital Zurich; & Travis Wiltshire, University of Tilburg

Understanding and improving teamwork is crucial across various domains, from healthcare to extreme environments. This workshop brings together experts who investigate teams through diverse methodological lenses. Through interactive discussions and hands-on analyses, including experts in several domains, attendees will expand their methodological toolkit, explore innovative approaches to team research, and connect with a diverse academic network.

This workshop aims to stimulate the use of a greater variety of research methods in team studies. Participants will gain insights into: case analyses of extreme teams, how to deal with small samples and rich multimethod data, possibilities and limitations of conducting behavioural observations of human-AI teams in the ICU, how to conduct large-scale intervention and evaluation studies in OR teams, what to consider when using biomarkers and computational approaches to study coordination in action teams, how to conduct an ethnographic study and obtain thick descriptions of emergency teams, and methods for observing team processes in medical teams in simulation settings.

Following an introduction to different perspectives in team research, participants will join expert-led subgroups. These discussions will deepen their understanding of distinct research approaches and provide an opportunity to ask questions. Beyond gaining methodological insights, this workshop fosters networking with leading experts and fellow researchers, potentially sparking future collaborations. Although participants at all career stages will benefit from this workshop, doctoral and postdoctoral researchers may have particular interest in attending.

SESSION B: The Teamwork Revolution: Co-Designing the Future of How We Teach, Learn, and Work Together
Thursday, July 17, 2025
9:00am - 12:00pm
Facilitators: Martijn Van der Kamp, Monash Business School & Kyle Christensen, Clemson University

This co-design workshop explores a pressing question: How can we enhance the student and educator experience of teamwork as a job-ready skill in higher education? Teamwork is a powerful driver of transformative learning, a space for diversity, inclusion and belonging, and a critical competency for professional success. Yet, students and educators alike struggle with it. In this interactive workshop, we will leverage teamwork, co-design, and futures thinking to diagnose key issues, reimagine approaches to teamwork education, and explore INGroup’s role in shaping this transformation. Through collaborative exercises, participants will identify key challenges, generate innovative strategies, share best practices, and gain practical tools to enhance teamwork education in their contexts.

This workshop seeks to: (a) Identify key challenges in teamwork education across disciplines and learning environments, (b) Generate innovative, evidence-based strategies to enhance teamwork education, (c) Define actionable steps for integrating teamwork education into curricula and institutional policies (d) capture insights to inform future INGroup initiatives and research.

It is anticipated that the workship will produce several outputs, including thematic maps of challenges in teamwork education, co-designed strategies and innovations related to teaching about teams. It is also intended that, through this workshop, the facilitators will create a synthesis document capturing insights for INGroup’s future work involving teaching.

Join us in shaping the future of teamwork education—one that better prepares students, supports educators, and strengthens the link between higher education and professional practice.

AFTERNOON WORKSHOPS
:

SESSION C: Develop an Example Computational Process Model to Study Teamwork With R and RStudio
Thursday, July 17, 2025
1:00pm - 4:00pm
Facilitator: Goran Kuljanin, DePaul University

Computational process models are an emerging tool with great value for understanding teamwork processes. The present workshop will guide attendees who are interested in learning to program a computational process model to study teamwork. The general goal is to provide an “end-to-end” experience for workshop attendees on how to develop a computational process model, and will be suited for a range of attendees; including those with advances understanding of the use of R, alongside those who are relative newcomers to coding. The workshop will draw upon recent publications involving computational modeling (see below).

The workshop will be an active learning experience. It will include: (a) learning about the differences between narrative construct theories versus computational process theories, (b) an overview of the general steps involved in developing computational process models, (c) using R and RStudio to demonstrate how to program a computational process model to study teamwork, (d) learning about how to execute a virtual experiment with the computational process model.

The workshop includes access to the completed code to facilitate assistance with coding errors attendees may generate as they program the model. Participants will have access to hands-on support during the workshop and will have access to a recorded version of the workshop for additional learning after the workshop.

Recent computational process model papers relating to this workshop:

ALTERNATIVE PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP SESSION

Mix, Mingle, and Measure with ConfLab: Experience and Shape New Interdisciplinary Paradigms for Group Dynamics Research

Thursday, July 17, 2025
1:00pm - 4:00pm
Facilitators: Hayley Hung, Delft University of Techology; Nale Lehmann-Willenbrock, University of Hamburg; Vanessa Begemann, University of Hamburg; Balint Dioszegi. University of Greenwich; Anne Ter Wal, Imperial College London

In addition to our typical preconference workshop offering, there is an addition preconference session that includes a novel combination of both learning about multimodal approaches to studying groups alongside actually participating in a study involving multimodal approaches.  See below for a preliminary invitation from the facilitators – and further information will be added to our site as available.

We would like to bring to your attention our pre-conference workshop “Mix, Mingle, and Measure with ConfLab: Experience and Shape New Interdisciplinary Paradigms for Group Dynamics Research”. It will be held in the afternoon of July 17 at the 20th Annual INGRoup Conference.

This interdisciplinary workshop has three overarching and interconnected aims, all under the motto “by the community, for the community”:
  1. Building connections and creating networking opportunities among scholars across disciplines and career stages, but who share a common interest: understanding group dynamics through innovate multimodal paradigms!
  2. Inspiring future interdisciplinary research and fostering interdisciplinary research collaborations on multimodal group interaction data using sensor data.
  3. Generating a rich dataset of multi-modal group interaction, which will be made available for participants and the broader research community.

This means, next to connecting with diverse scholars who share the same interest as you do and creating potential future research collaborations, as a participant of this workshop, you will also provide the very data that you could use later to research and collaborate on!

Please note: To register for and participate in this workshop, you must provide your informed consent to having your data collected.

For a first understanding, you can take have a look at a similar event hosted in 2019. Our own website for INGRoup Conference 2025 edition is coming soon, and it will include a sign-up link. The main difference between the 2019 and 2025 edition will be recordings of speech-quality audio of each participant a smart drinking glass that also records participant behavior.

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact to Hayley Hung (h.hung@tudelft.nl)

TRAVEL ADVICE

For many attendees, the best connection to Rotterdam will be to fly to Schiphol Airport (AMS) in Amsterdam. From there, the high-speed Intercity Direct train will take you to Rotterdam in 25 minutes. Rotterdam also has excellent train connections with many cities in Europe. Finally, the Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTM) may be an option for connections to several specific destinations in Europe.
